Improvement of core rendering function of UE5

In this release, we continue to refine all of UE5's core rendering capabilities to achieve our long-standing goal: to make it easier and more efficient for developers to use them to implement games running at 60fps frame rates on next-generation hosts. These improvements also provide better results and stronger performance for linear content creators.

Specifically, Nanite has faster performance when dealing with masking materials such as vegetation, and the new "explicit tangent" option further expands the types of surfaces it can present; on the other hand, Lumen using hardware ray tracing also extends functionality, including support for multiple reflections and faster performance on the host.

Other significant improvements include virtual shadow mapping (VSM) (now available for production), timing Super Resolution (TSR), fur Groom, path tracking, and Substrate.

Multi-process baking

Another useful improvement is that when converting content from an UE internal format to a platform-specific format, developers can now take advantage of additional CPU and memory resources to significantly reduce the time it takes to get baked output from building farm servers or local workstations.

When multi-process baking is enabled, the child process starts and performs part of the baking work with the main process. Developers can choose how many sub-processes to run on a machine.

Movie camera binding guideway

Now, the new movie camera binding guideway Actor enables filmmakers to simulate the workflow and results of traditional cameras moving lenses along tracks or on camera cars.

The film camera binding guideway provides finer control than the existing binding guideway, including arranging the camera rotation angle, focal length, and focus distance settings at different control points of the path. It supports both the editor workflow and the virtual camera workflow.

Improvement of virtual camera

When it comes to virtual cameras, the system's improvements in this version include: lens trial shots can be reviewed directly on iPad to speed up iterations, and different virtual camera outputs are transmitted to different team members (for example, outputs provided to camera operators have camera controls, while those provided to directors do not), which facilitates collaborative shooting of virtual cameras Record at a slower frame rate and then play back at a normal speed to make it easier to capture fast-moving movements.
