CTOnews.com Sept. 6, last week, Microsoft announced that it will provide Teams online meetings and collaboration services in the form of independent products in most parts of Europe from October 1. The move is to circumvent the European Commission's antitrust investigation.

Now, the head of Zoom, a Microsoft Teams competitor, believes that the United States should conduct a similar investigation.

Yuan Zheng, chief executive of Zoom, was asked about Microsoft's separation of Teams from Microsoft 365in a speech at Goldman Sachs' Communacopia + technology conference, Bloomberg reported. "you should also ask the FTC of the United States about this question," Yuan said.

FTC means the Federal Trade Commission of the United States. In his comments, Yuan Zheng seemed to think that the move to break up Teams was a good idea for the overall competition, and said, "you have to be fair anyway."

It is worth mentioning that FTC has had a "war" with Microsoft this year. CTOnews.com reported earlier this summer that FTC tried to block Microsoft's plan to buy Activision Blizzard in court, but failed to persuade the judge to issue a preliminary injunction on the move.

Zoom, founded in 2011, has a large number of users for its online videoconferencing software, but usage has declined significantly since its peak in 2020. In 2023, the company announced layoffs, affecting 15% of its employees.
