The upcoming Volkswagen ID 2 is one of three pilot models that will take a shorter 36-month development cycle, Volkswagen Technical Director Kegurnitz said at the Munich auto show. The first design sketch of the car was completed in December last year, and Volkswagen hopes to put it on the market by the end of 2025. "you can see from the Chinese competitors that this is feasible," Grunitz said. "We have specific ideas on how to do this."

Grunitz says shortening the development cycle requires Volkswagen to build new simulation tools and verification methods. He added that the development cycle could be shortened by reducing various road validations, test cycles, and cooling tests. For example, cooling tests can be shortened from two to three winters to one winter.

CTOnews.com noted that Grunitz said BYD is one of his most admired Chinese competitors, which can produce high-quality cars in a shorter time. "they have a real platform strategy, low costs, very good batteries, and have built some excellent factories around the world."

Volkswagen will also work more closely with suppliers to integrate their technology and ideas into their models, rather than "want to develop everything on their own".

Grunitz also acknowledged that there are further risks in ensuring that cars are of consistent quality and meet Volkswagen customer expectations, especially in problem-prone models such as the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen ID 3. " This is the challenge we face. We are not going to hand over thousands of faulty vehicles to our customers as you see in Golf 8 or ID 3. The question is how do we reduce the test cycle and maintain quality. "

Volkswagen will also seek not to start from scratch every time it develops a new car, but to extend about 70-80% of its models to the next generation.
