CTOnews.com, September 5 (Xinhua)-- South Korea's Samsung Electric Co., Ltd. announced Monday that it has signed a camera supply contract with a well-known American electric car manufacturer, according to Korea Economic Daily. Although Samsung Electric did not disclose the specific name of the customer, it is speculated that the US company may be Tesla, and the size and amount of the contract have not yet been determined.

Samsung Electric is expected to provide cameras for a number of Tesla models, including Cybertruck, Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y, the report said. These cameras are ultra-high definition, with more than 5 million pixels. This is valuable for Tesla because the company is committed to vision-based autopilot technology.

CTOnews.com notes that Samsung seems to be trying to make sure it becomes one of Tesla's most important suppliers. Last year it was reported that Samsung Electric would replace LG Innotek as Tesla's main supplier of camera modules. At the time, LG provided 70 per cent of Tesla's camera module, while Samsung provided the remaining 30 per cent.

Samsung Motor's camera supply contract is the company's second major order this year, following reports in July that Samsung had won a contract to supply chips to Tesla's next-generation Hardware 5.0computer. However, it may take several years for HW5 to launch. At present, Tesla is still slowly launching Hardware 4.0, and even the vehicle Musk used to demonstrate FSD Beta V12 is only equipped with Hardware 3.
