Lidar, it's really hard.

Bosch, the world's largest automotive supply chain manufacturer, recently confirmed that the company will abandon its own lidar.

Bosch started lidar research and development in 2020, after a number of road tests, and as redundant hardware for intelligent driving, lidar has been launched on a large scale this year.

So Bosch abandoned the lidar route? As the world's No.1 automotive first-class supplier, Bosch is certainly not giving up.

The spokesman also confirmed that the focus on lidar tracks remains, giving up on self-development because lidar may be too difficult.

Bosch gave up self-research lidar In July this year, it was reported that the well-known Tier 1 Bosch would give up research and development of lidar, which did not attract widespread attention at that time. After all, lidar plays an important role in the current wave of automobile intelligence. Bosch, as a well-known supplier, cannot give up the key to competing for the future.

A Bosch spokesperson confirmed the news to German media recently, saying that the company decided not to invest any resources in the development of lidar, but to invest resources in the development of other radars.

Bosch's turn is beginning to pay off, judging by its recent display at the Munich Motor Show, with a new generation of radar sensors that have improved detection range and resolution and can effectively identify small objects such as motorcycles.

The spokesperson also gave two explanations for abandoning lidar development: technical complexity and time to market.

Focusing on the present, although lidar is a gadget, it is actually very difficult to "nibble" and requires a lot of money and manpower to develop.

Looking into the future, the time to market is still a problem. At present, there are only well-known players such as Hesai Technology and Sagitar Juchuang in China on the track. Bosch's lidar may not be rolled up after mass production.

It is not easy to make now, and it is not necessarily easy to sell, so Bosch decided to terminate the research and development of lidar.

Bosch added, however, that it will retain its own lidar expertise for future evaluation and integration into its own products as needed.

Giving up isn't a denial. Bosch doesn't think lidar isn't important for autonomous driving.

Bosch's decision, according to the spokesman, is its own helplessness and has nothing to do with the current battle between "pure vision" and fusion-sensing autonomous driving routes. Bosch did not deny his initial intention to build lidar.

In January 2020, Bosch announced that it would launch a lidar specifically designed for cars, although no hardware details were announced.

Bosch called the move "embracing autonomous driving," believing that cameras and radars developing vision solutions in parallel would maximize safety.

However, this time, started a little late, compared with this year has been listed in the United States and achieved profitability of the player Hesai technology, the latter in 2020 have two products officially released, and still walk the car rules and robot two tracks.

According to German media reports, Bosch has previously conducted a number of autonomous driving case tests on high-speed and urban roads, further affirming the superiority of lidar in the tests.

For example, when motorcycles approach cars at high speeds at intersections, lidar can more reliably detect such objects with narrow profiles. And it's not obscured by adverse light like a camera.

After three and a half years of hard work, Bosch finally gave up lidar as a "hard bone" by integrating the current research and development situation and future market performance.

On the one hand, Bosch and other giants encountered difficulties in developing lidar, while on the other hand, Hesai Technology, Sagitar Juchuang and other players were on the track.

Even the man who was "far ahead" was "persuaded to retreat" by Hu Xiaobo, chairman of Radium Intelligence, in public:

I want to persuade President Yu that Huawei should stop making laser radar. His thing can't do me and Sagitar.

DJI silently withdrew from the most intense mass production car competition, in Xiaopeng P5 after no car rules landing progress, even Xiaopeng other models also turned to Sagitar.

Therefore, the automobile industry has undergone great changes in the past century, and new things emerge one after another. In the past, the tycoons who had no disadvantages also encountered difficult problems and had no choice but to turn around.

Bosch's abandonment of lidar may be just a signal of industry development:

The intelligent automobile supply chain enters the reshuffle period, and the division of labor in the industry is re-defined.
