CTOnews.com, September 5 (Xinhua)-- Tesla Chairman Robin Dan Holm said at a conference in Canberra on Tuesday that Australia should abandon its position of "digging and transportation" and compete with the United States for investment in battery manufacturing.

She expects Tesla to spend more than A $4.3 billion (currently about 20.21 billion yuan) on Australian minerals this year, more than triple the A $1.3 billion in 2021.

"demand for Australian minerals [in the industry] will only continue to rise," she said. " She stressed that Australia has large reserves of commodities such as lithium and is the world's largest supplier of the battery material.

PexelsCTOnews.com note: Robyn M. Denholm, an Australian corporate executive, took over as chairman of Tesla from Elon Musk in November 2018.

At present, Australia is already one of the largest lithium producers in the world, and the production of nickel, cobalt, manganese and rare earths is also among the best, but almost all lithium ores are shipped to Asia for processing into value-added products. Although the country accounts for 47% of the global lithium supply, 90% of it is exported to China for refining.

Speaking at a meeting of the Minerals Council, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the clean energy revolution would boost the global economy over the next two decades. Australia is at an "extraordinary intersection of unprecedented global demand and adequate domestic supply".

"Australia has only one such opportunity. That is why our government is determined to work with you to turn this opportunity into a generation of prosperity." Albany said.

Robin said Australia should attract at least 30 battery-grade lithium processing plants to the country through tax breaks, otherwise the country could lose to North America and Europe.

"the longer we wait, the higher the risk of losing this opportunity, because other countries have overtaken us without any or as much basic materials and occupied the most valuable part of the battery supply chain."this is the economic development opportunity that we have lost."
