CTOnews.com, September 5, Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industry Association (JEITA) data released on August 31 showed that shipments of electronic components by Japanese companies fell 7% in June from a year earlier to 355.9 billion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 17.688 billion yuan), down from the previous year for eight consecutive months.

Transactions in final products such as smartphones and personal computers have weakened against a backdrop of inflation, and supplies to China, which account for 30 per cent of overall shipments, remain sluggish, according to the Nikkei.

The number of connectors connecting circuits and components decreased by 13% to 52 billion yen (currently about 2.584 billion yuan). Processors for smartphones and the like rose 6 per cent to 29.2 billion yen (currently about 1.451 billion yuan), while power components rose 19 per cent to 25.5 billion yen (currently about 1.267 billion yuan).

Overall, Japan's shipments to China, its largest customer, fell 17% to 119.9 billion yen (currently about 5.959 billion yuan) in June, down from the previous year for eight consecutive months. On the other hand, domestic shipments to Japan rose 6% to 79.7 billion yen (currently about 3.961 billion yuan), surpassing the previous year for five consecutive months.

Japanese media said that the majority view is that shipments of electronic components will slowly recover from the second half of 2023. Apple's new iPhone, scheduled for September, is expected to boost demand, and developments in the Chinese economy and car production will also affect future shipments.
