CTOnews.com, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) at present, most lithium iron phosphate batteries in the world are made by Chinese companies, but South Korean battery makers Samsung SDI, LG New Energy and SK On have been reluctant to develop such technologies, but that has begun to change.

Samsung SDI unveiled its lithium ferromanganese phosphate (LMFP) battery for the first time at the IAA Mobility 2023 auto show in Munich, Germany, yesterday, according to BusinessKorea. Compared with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, manganese is added to the cathode material of this battery.

Samsung SDI previously produced mainly high-nickel ternary batteries, and this high-performance lithium ferromanganese phosphate battery will be an important step for Samsung SDI to diversify.

The South Korean battery maker has said in the past that it plans to focus on high-end batteries and aims to provide cheap cobalt-free batteries rather than lithium iron phosphate batteries.

However, Samsung SDI CEO later admitted that LFP batteries are one of the important platforms in electric vehicles and are working to develop LFP batteries to diversify their business and customers.

CTOnews.com inquiry found that the current automotive lithium iron phosphate battery market can be said to be dominated by Chinese companies. China accounts for more than 90% of the global market share of such batteries, and brands such as Tesla, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz are using such batteries.

Compared with the traditional lithium iron phosphate battery, the lithium iron phosphate battery with manganese can increase the energy density by about 15-20% at almost the same cost.

In addition, Samsung SDI has introduced a new shape battery called the "side battery", which transfers the positive and negative electrodes of the battery from the top and bottom to the side, and the battery can also be equipped with cooling systems at the top and bottom to improve thermal safety.
