Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Alejandro86 for the clue delivery! After three and a half years of hard work, the game was taken off the shelves by Steam just because of using ChatGPT.

The complaint went viral as soon as it was posted on Reddit, and the popularity of onlookers reached 2.5k.

The poster Shasaur (let's call him Uncle S for a moment) said that he and Steam had been sawing for a long time, but the game was finally taken off the shelves.

When he mentioned that he had received the notice of removal from the shelves, he deliberately used the word "randomly" to set off his confusion:

I spent years of hard work and savings on this game, and all I got was "Sorry, your game has been taken off the shelves."

What makes Uncle S feel aggrieved is that AI (ChatGPT) is not a required option at all and can be played normally even if the game is not opened.

In the post, Uncle S said frankly that he no longer wanted to negotiate with Steam, so he chose to ask netizens for help.

An informed netizen retweeted the host's experience on Twitter and called on people to help him.

In contrast, some netizens commented that small developers are the biggest victims of "anti-AI action".

Let's sort out the whole story.

I was asked by netizens to know that it was removed from the shelves before introducing Uncle S's experience, let's talk about how the game is "including AI".

To put it simply, Uncle S added a mod to the game, so that players can use API to generate content to replace NPC dialogue with ChatGPT.

About three or four months ago, Uncle S decided to add this module tentatively to the game.

This feature is optional, and even the API has to be used by the player.

This version was submitted to Steam a month ago, and when it was received, it said it needed additional review of the details of AI.

Uncle S cooperated to provide relevant information, saying that AI does not exist in the game ontology, and the modules in mod are also "very safe".

But the news has been lost since then, and Steam gave Uncle S little news in the following month: he neither asked any more questions nor refused to tell him when the audit was expected.

After a nervous and long wait, Uncle S finally received a notice to get off the shelves and a "your game contains AI" response.

Even Uncle S learned that the game had been removed from the shelves not through Steam, and some fans in Discord asked him why the game was gone.

As a result, there is a scene of posting complaints about asking for help.

But some netizens in the comments pointed out that although he sympathized with Uncle S's experience, he should not have known Steam's rules about AI.

We have looked through the relevant rules of Steam, which does not directly prohibit the use of AI, but contains such a clause:

Content that should not be posted on Steam:

……

5. Content that you do not own or have sufficient rights to.

The public relations department of Valve, which is behind Steam, told The Verge in an email that the phrase "disable AI" was inaccurate.

On the contrary, we are studying how to better integrate AI into our platform. We do not disable AI, but we must ensure that we do not infringe on the copyright of others.

However, in the actual implementation process, the copyright issues brought about by AI are still controversial, so most games including AI can not escape the fate of being removed from the shelves.

Some developers have previously said that their games were removed from the shelves just with some AI paintings.

In Steam's message, the first thing to mention is not AI, but "there is content that others own copyright."

It was not until the second half of the email that it was said that there was other people's copyright content in AI's training data, so the copyright ownership of the pictures generated by AI was not clear, which indirectly led to the removal of the shelves.

It is right to respect copyright, but some netizens think that Steam's current one-size-fits-all approach is a bit simple and rude.

Back to Uncle S for help, many netizens gave advice.

These suggestions can be divided into three categories:

First of all, it has something to do with Steam, forcing it to speed up the improvement of the relevant rules.

The second is to switch to other platforms (can't you afford to hide if you can't afford it)

The third is to adopt circuitous tactics.

For example, the netizen told the post that the "mod" should also be a mod in form, not submitted with the game ontology, but as a module downloaded separately outside the Steam.

In the current situation is indeed a solution, but to solve the bell also need to tie the bell, in order to really solve the problem, we have to rely on the improvement of Steam's own rules.

One More Thing, how do other game platforms treat the AI content in the game?

Epic Games, the competitor of Steam in PC, is more open to AI.

Its platform rules do not prohibit AI content, but provide "noAI" filtering for users who do not like games that include AI.

CEO Tim Sweeney put it this way:

I don't want to hinder the development of AI, nor will I allow unauthorized grabbing of other people's works.

In terms of mainframe platform, Sony said it would actively develop artificial intelligence.

Shohei Yoshida, former president of Sony Entertainment, also said that AI will create a lot of "beautiful things" in the game field.

So what do you think of adding AI to the game?
