CTOnews.com September 4 news, TrendForce research shows that after the first quarter of global smartphone production decreased by nearly 20% year-on-year, the second quarter of production continued to decline by about 6.6%, only 270 million. A total of 520 million smartphones were produced in the first half of 2023, down 13.3% from the same period last year, hitting a ten-year low in both individual quarters and the first half of the year.

TrendForce analysts pointed out that there are three reasons for the sluggish production performance:

First, the lifting of epidemic prevention restrictions did not drive demand as expected;

Second, the demographic dividend effect in emerging Indian markets has not been effective.

Thirdly, the brand in 2022 was greatly dragged down by too high channel inventory. It was originally estimated that the brand would recover to the production level with the inventory de-conversion, but now the consumption willingness of the people is more conservative due to the weak economy, resulting in the production performance in the first half of the year being worse than expected.

In the second quarter of this year, the most obvious change in the smartphone market was voice transmission (including TECNO, Infinix and itel), which squeezed vivo into the fifth place in the world for the first time, with output increasing by more than 70% month-on-month to 25.1 million units.

In the second quarter, Samsung still topped the list, with Q2 production reaching 53.9 million, down 12.4% month-on-month. At the same time, the second quarter coincided with the alternation of Apple's new and old models, making it the lowest production performance of the four quarters, with production of 42 million units, a decrease of 21.2% from the previous quarter.

TrendForce also said that the upcoming iPhone 15/15 Plus in the third quarter will have an impact on Q3 production performance due to poor CIS yield.

CTOnews.com notes that analyst data shows Samsung and Apple are roughly equal in total production forecasts for the full year, and if the iPhone 15 series has better sales than expected, it may push Samsung into the top brand in the global market.

In addition to Samsung and Apple, Xiaomi (including Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO) produced about 35 million in the second quarter, an increase of 32.1% month-on-month. OPPO (including OPPO, realme and OnePlus) produced about 33.6 million units in the second quarter, an increase of 25.4% month-on-month. Q3 is expected to have an increase of about 10~15%, closely following Xiaomi.
