It is mainly used in a variety of artificial intelligence (AI) and high performance computing (HPC) applications, as well as training large AI models. MSU-270 uses the "latest graphics accelerator", but MSU did not disclose its source.

The MSU-270 supercomputer is said to be based on about 100 "latest graphics accelerators" and new systems for energy supply, cooling and communications. The development of the machine is in line with MSU's long-term plan to make progress in all areas by 2030.

Although 400 PetaFLOPS is excellent performance, CTOnews.com notes that this is the "AI" PetaFLOPS, which may mean the FP16 data format. The highest performance supercomputer in Russia has a Rmax performance of about 21.5FP64 PetaFLOPS,Rpeak and a performance of 29.5FP64 PetaFLOPS. However, MSU did not disclose the FP64 performance of its MSU-270 (which would be several orders of magnitude lower than 400 PetaFLOPS), but it is still probably the fastest machine in the country.

The supercomputer will be used to develop new tools based on artificial intelligence, including big data analysis and AI service protection algorithms. In addition to AI, the system will also support research in physical, chemical, biological, psychological, social, geological and medical fields. In addition, MSU-270 will play an important role in educating and training AI experts.

MSU-270 will be integrated into the general network of the Russian Science Supercomputing Center, extending its use beyond MSU.
