CTOnews.com, Sept. 3 (Xinhua)-- Ultra HDR format is one of many new features Google has brought to Android 14. The first app that supports the Ultra HDR format has now been identified as Google's own Google Photos.

The current Android version already supports HDR video, while Android 14 will further enhance HDR photography, introduce the Ultra HDR format, be backward compatible with JPEG, and provide a dynamic range beyond 8-bit.

Photos taken in Ultra HDR format will be stored in 10-bit high dynamic range. Due to the need for hardware support, the initial launch is limited to Android flagship models. It has been confirmed that Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will support the new Ultra HDR format photo shooting.

Google hopes that Ultra HDR format will become the default format for system built-in camera applications and third-party camera applications. Google's Android team has worked with companies such as Qualcomm to optimize hardware and support Ultra HDR in other device forms.

In the latest version 6.51.0.561138754, AssembleDebug found some strings that point to Ultra HDR support, involving browsing, backing up, editing, sharing, and downloading of Ultra HDR.

CTOnews.com officially obtained that the Ultra HDR file contains a standard 8-bit (Standard dynamic range, SDR) JPEG compressed base image, another smaller resolution JPEG image with gain mapping joined by the base image, and metadata for HDR reconstruction. Ultra HDR images can be decoded by a range of different rendering formats from full SDR to full HDR.

That is, the Ultra HDR file will retain the higher range of colors captured in HDR (high dynamic range), while it will be displayed as SDR (standard dynamic range) on non-HDR compatible screens, and will show better color and saturation when displayed on HDR screens.
