Users who pay Facebook and Instagram subscriptions will not see ads on App, which could help Meta fend off privacy issues and other censorship by EU regulators, according to people familiar with the matter.

CTOnews.com learned that Meta will continue to offer free versions of Facebook and Instagram with ads in the European Union, and it is not clear how much these paid versions of App will cost or when they will be launched.

In July, the EU Supreme Court effectively banned Meta from merging user data collected through its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as through external websites and applications, except with the explicit consent of users.

In January, Meta was fined 390 million euros by Irish regulators for forcing users to accept personalized ads as a condition for using Facebook.

The rulings stem from the 2018 European General data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a landmark legislation to protect people's online data.
