Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com September 2 news, IBM announced in June 2020, in response to the Black Lives Matter campaign initiative, to promote racial equality, combat systemic racism, exit the Face Recognition business.
IBM, however, has not fulfilled this promise, and the latest news is that it has reached a 54.7 million pound (CTOnews.com note: currently about 502 million yuan) order with the British government to provide such a system.
CTOnews.com reported in June 2020 that IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said:
IBM firmly opposes and will not tolerate the use of any technology to spy on people, racial profiling, violate fundamental human rights and freedoms, and for any purpose inconsistent with our values and principles of trust and transparency, including Face Recognition technology provided by other companies.
We believe it is time for a national conversation on whether and how domestic law enforcement should deploy Face Recognition technology.
IBM signed a £ 54.7 million deal with the UK government in August to develop a biometric facial recognition platform for law enforcement and immigration officials.
According to foreign technology media The Verge and British news survey agency Liberty, the platform initially covers matching fingerprints and will introduce facial recognition systems in the later stage.
IBM later clarified that selling the system did not conflict with the 2020 announcement. IBM spokesman Imtiaz Mufti said:
By 2020, we promise that IBM will no longer provide universal Face Recognition, that Face Recognition will no longer be used for mass surveillance, or for racial or other human rights violations.
The platform is not intended for mass surveillance, but rather helps police and immigration officials identify suspects using fingerprint and photo databases. The system does not sample video and does not perform Face Recognition in a crowd.
