On August 30, the fourth Science and Technology week and Strategic emerging Industries Co-creation and Development Conference of China Mobile was held in Beijing. At the meeting, China Mobile, together with more than a dozen industrial partners such as Qualcomm, launched China Mobile 5G lightweight Technology (RedCap) "1x 5T 5" innovation demonstration city, providing technology test and application demonstration platform for the upper and lower reaches of the industry chain, accelerating the promotion of large-scale commercial use of 5G RedCap technology, promoting the deep integration of 5G into thousands of industries, and opening up a broader space for 5G application.

Join hands to accelerate the commercial use of RedCap and open up a new blue ocean of 5G IoT

As an important part of 5G evolution, RedCap (also known as NR-Light) greatly reduces the complexity, cost and power consumption of 5G products by lightweight design of terminal bandwidth, number of transceiver antennas and optimizing modulation order, thus filling the gap between high-speed connected mobile broadband terminals and very low-bandwidth NB-IoT terminals. On the industry side, RedCap achieves a balance between performance and cost on the premise of ensuring business performance, and can be widely used in wearable devices, industrial sensors, video surveillance and other fields, meeting many vertical industry application scenarios such as intelligent logistics, intelligent inspection, intelligent manufacturing, and accelerating the upgrading of industrial digital intelligence.

With its technical and cost advantages, RedCap will become an important jigsaw puzzle for 5G to achieve low, medium and high-speed scenery, helping to enhance economies of scale. Recently, the notice on promoting the Evolution and Application Innovation of 5G lightweight (RedCap) Technology (draft) issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology points out that by 2025, cities above county level across the country will achieve RedCap coverage, the number of RedCap connections will increase by 10 million, and more than 5 Redcap application fields with millions of connections will be built. RedCap development is driving into the fast lane.

Driven by the market and policy, China Mobile, together with Qualcomm and other partners, jointly released the RedCap "1-5-5" innovation demonstration city at the right time, which will comprehensively promote RedCap technology evolution and application innovation. Including 1 industrial cluster innovation center, 5 technological innovation cities and 5 application demonstration cities, it will provide RedCap test verification, achievement transformation and application promotion services for industrial chain partners, accelerate the mature commercial use of networks, chips, modules and terminals, and create a number of RedCap benchmarking projects to lead industry application innovation.

Snapdragon X35 integrates innovation, enabling diversified applications and industrial upgrading

As an important part of accelerating the landing of RedCap, Qualcomm released the world's first 5G RedCap modem and RF system, Snapdragon X35, in February this year, which combines a number of key 5G technology breakthroughs. The Snapdragon X35 has a cost-effective, streamlined design that supports leading energy efficiency, optimized heat dissipation, and a smaller board area; it also uses advanced modem and RF technologies to improve 5G terminal performance by expanding 5G coverage, reducing latency, improving battery life and increasing uplink speed.

With its optimized design and breakthrough performance, the Snapdragon X35 is able to cost-effectively empower new 5G use cases, including mass-market broadband use cases such as fixed wireless access CPE, networked PC, mobile routers and tablets, industrial IoT cases such as industrial sensors, IoT gateways, surveillance cameras, and consumer-grade IoT endpoints such as high-end wearables, health monitoring devices, and cloud-connected XR glasses.

Snapdragon X35 plays an important role in improving quality, increasing efficiency and reducing cost of 5G. Based on this, Qualcomm works closely with Chinese partners to accelerate the maturity and commercial landing of the RedCap industry. Only one month after the release of Snapdragon X35, module manufacturers such as Mobile Communications and Mega Intelligence launched 5G module products based on Snapdragon X35; in June this year, Mega Intelligent released a RedCap CPE solution based on Snapdragon X35 and achieved small batch commercial use at home and abroad; during MWC Shanghai, Xuntong released RedCap module based on Snapdragon X35.

Next, RedCap will gradually replace 4G to become the main force of medium and high-speed IoT, and become a "booster" to accelerate the expansion of 5G. China Mobile and other operators, module manufacturers such as Mobile Communications, Mega Intelligence and Core Communications, and chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm, will continue to join hands with ecological partners to promote the maturity of RedCap technology, industry and applications, further release the greater potential of 5G and inject new momentum into the development of the digital economy.
