Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, August 31 (Xinhua)-- Intel's next-generation Xeon scalable processor (code: Emerald Rapids) and its successor products will stop supporting Optane persistent memory (PMem), according to information dug out from PerfMon tools and InstLatX64.

CTOnews.com Note: Intel Aoton persistent memory (PMem) and Intel Aoton solid state disk both use the same Aoton memory media, but they are completely different products. Intel has previously revealed in its 2022 Q2 earnings report that it will completely terminate its Optane business, resulting in a $559 million inventory write-down. It is clear that Intel has moved to CXL 2.0 memory expansion modules.

For now, Intel Emerald Rapids uses technologies similar to Sapphire Rapids, such as the same high-performance microarchitecture and sharing the same platform. In other words, removing support for Optane persistent memory is a business decision, not a technical decision.

Considering that Intel will officially stop supplying Optane persistent memory modules on December 29, 2023, it is also logical for the company to withdraw support for Optane persistent memory in 2024 products at this time.

Starting with the 5th generation Xeon Extensible processor (Emerald Rapids), Intel will support CXL 2.0 Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 devices, including CXL memory (CAMM,CXL Attached Memory), the immediate successor to Intel Optane persistent memory modules.

In addition, Emerald Rapids supports the same CAMM memory mode as Sapphire Rapids processors with Optane PMem, probably because Intel uses the same controller IP.

Of course, technically speaking, Intel Emerald Rapids and its subsequent Xeon processors will also continue to support Optane SSDs because they use industry-standard interfaces and can access any new machine, but I'm afraid not many suppliers will use newer data center / workstation platforms for verification.
