CTOnews.com, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) OpenAI, the developer of the popular artificial intelligence chat robot ChatGPT, has asked a federal court in San Francisco to dismiss part of two lawsuits filed by writers, including comedian Sarah Sarah Silverman, who accused the company of infringing their copyright.

OpenAI told the court on Monday that the text generated by ChatGPT did not infringe upon the rights of writers' books. OpenAI also denied the writers' core allegations that even though using their books to train ChatGPT infringed their copyright, the company did not ask the court to dismiss them on Monday.

CTOnews.com previously reported that this summer, two different writer groups filed a class action against OpenAI, accusing OpenAI of illegally including their books in data sets used to train ChatGPT. Silverman's team also filed lawsuits against Meta Platforms, while others filed similar lawsuits against companies such as Google, Microsoft and Stability AI.

OpenAI on Monday responded to the writer's allegation that the text generated by ChatGPT constituted a "derivative work" of his book, indirectly infringing their copyright. OpenAI claimed that the authors failed to prove that ChatGPT's output was similar enough to their work to prove copyright infringement, and OpenAI asked the court to dismiss the authors' charges based on state law and the Digital Millennium copyright Act.
