CTOnews.com To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its popular Passat model, Volkswagen has launched a new ninth-generation Passat wagon, which will be available in the UK by the end of this year, only in the travel version, equipped with upgraded four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. The latter, thanks to its larger battery capacity, can offer a range of more than 62 miles (CTOnews.com notes: about 99.78 km) on pure electricity.

The new Passat shares a platform with the upcoming third-generation Skoda Superb and will be produced in Slovenia. The new Passat is one of the new models in the Volkswagen range based on the new MQB Evo platform, which will also be used in the upcoming third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, offering a sturdier rear axle carrier and more advanced electrification, connectivity and chassis features.

The new Passat retains the McPherson-style front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, but has been extensively modified with new two-valve shock absorbers and Volkswagen's new Vehicle Dynamics Manager (VDM) system, which Volkswagen claims brings greater comfort and better driving stability.

The new Passat has also increased significantly in size, increasing its length by 144 mm to 4917 mm, its width by 20 mm to 1852 mm and its height by 10 mm to 1506 mm. Most importantly, the wheelbase has also been increased by 50 mm to 2841 mm. These changes result in more spacious interiors, with 50 mm more rear legroom, 40 litres more trunk volume to 690 litres and the possibility of expanding to 1920 litres by reclining the rear seats.

The new Passat also features a completely redesigned dashboard and a more luxurious interior. Standard features include a 10.3-inch instrument display and a 12.9-inch central control display (with an optional 15.0-inch top), running Volkswagen's fourth generation MIB operating system, with a simpler menu structure, higher-definition graphics and conversational voice control.

There's also a new multi-function steering wheel with a bumper design that frees up space inside the center console for a larger cup holder and optional smartphone charging pad.

The new car will feature four gear series: Passat, Business, Elegance and R-Line. Standard equipment includes LED headlights and tail lights, smartphone mirrors, USB-C charging ports and roof racks. The entry-level petrol version is expected to start at around £ 30000 (currently around RMB278, 000), with the price of the top-end hybrid expected to rise to around £ 50000 (currently around RMB464, 000).

The new Passat will offer eight different powertrain options, including two turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI gasoline engines.(201 hp and 262 hp, respectively), three turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI diesel engines (121 hp, 148 hp and 190 hp, respectively), and a 48V light hybrid system with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 148 hp. In addition, there are two plug-in hybrid systems (equipped with turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, combined with electric motor output of 201 hp and 268 hp respectively). The plug-in hybrid system has a battery capacity of 19.7kWh and can support up to 50kW DC fast charging.

The TSI petrol, TDI diesel and eTSI light hybrids are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the eHybrids PHEV comes standard with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. All models are front-wheel drive, except for the 262bhp TSI and 190bhp TDI engine versions with 4Motion four-wheel drive.

The new Passat also plans to launch a 300-horsepower four-wheel drive high-performance version of the Passat R wagon, which is expected to debut in 2024.
