Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, August 30, JBD today announced the launch of the long-awaited single-chip RGB MicroLED micro-display Phoenix (Phoenix) series prototype, which has a field-of-view angle of 50 °, which is wider than the previous Hummingbird (hummingbird) series.

According to officials, Phoenix's current engineering sample uses a 0.22in panel with 2K resolution and 5.2um sub-pixel spacing, and each 2X2 sub-pixel array is combined into a 5um-spaced white pixel. The engineering sample also has four independent current drive channels, three of which are connected to the AlInGaN blue transmitter, AlInGaN green transmitter and AlInGaP red transmitter.

The official stressed that "these semiconductor emitters are stacked vertically and coaxial" and provided cross-sectional SEM images for demonstration, in which (a) full-color wafers; (b) 45-degree tilted SEM images for 5um color pixel spacing arrays; and (c) focused ion beam cutting and cross-sectional SEM images for multistage interconnection techniques with no electrical connection schedule shown.

The ▲ image source JBD officially claims that this unique transmitter arrangement allows for high WPE and high concentration in the vertical direction. In the future production phase, JBD plans to use the 0.3-inch panel as a standard product, with 4K resolution and 2um sub-pixel spacing, equivalent to 2K resolution, white pixel spacing is 4um.

CTOnews.com after inquiry learned that currently using quantum dots (QD) for color conversion, to achieve a single piece of RGB display the most commonly used method. This downward conversion method is currently limited in achieving maximum brightness and device lifetime because the QD lifetime decreases significantly with the increase of pump flux density and MicroLED junction temperature.

JBD claims that trichromatic integration technologies based on epitaxy, such as polychromatic epitaxial layers, selective region epitaxy, regeneration, nanostructures and 3D structures, have not yet produced better prototypes with pixel spacing smaller than 10um. The existing full-color MicroLED displays on the market are achieved by combining three separate red, green and blue panels with an X cube prism. Single-panel single-chip RGB micro-display is usually the first choice in the industry, which can achieve a larger field of vision and a smaller optical engine shape.

JBD claims that its Phoenix prototype demonstrates the feasibility of using monolithic RGB MicroLED microdisplays with native semiconductors below the 5um pitch, which is more than two orders of magnitude brighter than existing single-panel Micro-OLED displays. In addition, because the simplified system-level integration into AR glasses reduces the optical loss, higher waveguide collimation efficiency can be achieved.

▲ image source JBDJBD said that a key feature of Phoenix (Phoenix) technology is that "the total stack thickness is smaller than 5um, which is the thinnest stack thickness ever, which can minimize absorption loss in the cavity". Coupled with the ability to operate the native color light source at high flux density, the platform "can achieve white balance brightness of up to 1 million nits", resulting in "high color quality and color purity images".
