Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com August 30, Intel unveiled a new CPU during Hot Chips 2023. Based on the RISC reduced instruction set rather than the traditional x86, the chip has 8 cores and 528 threads, providing very robust parallel and multi-core performance.
Intel developed this special chip to meet specific workloads that not only require high parallel computing power, but also lead to underutilization of available hardware (especially cache), such as graphics analysis and HIVE projects like DARPA.
For similar workloads, Intel designed a new CPU with 8 physical cores and 528 logical threads, each with 66 threads and each core with 192KB cache and 4MB SRAM.
It is worth mentioning that although this CPU is based on RISC architecture, it uses silicon photonics for network communication. In other words, the CPU will appear in the form of a chipset, and the optical chip will be connected to the main CPU chip with the help of EMIB interconnection technology.
In addition, the Intel CPU has 16 multithreaded pipes (MTP), while single-threaded pipes (STP) provide eight times the single-threaded performance.
As mentioned earlier, the chip is based on a custom RISC design, and each thread contains 32 registers. In addition, the chip also supports custom DDR5 memory controllers, up to DDR5-4400 DIMMs (8B access granularity), 32 high-speed AIB ports and PCIe Gen4 x8 protocol.
CTOnews.com summarizes some of the parameters about the chip here:
TSMC 7nm FinFET process node
Interconnect: 15 metal layers
276 million transistor
1.2 billion transistor (CPU core)
Total 316mm2 area
Each core area is 9.2 mm2
705 Signals
3275 BGA package size
According to reports, Intel has deployed a 2D on-die mesh mesh interconnection structure based on 16 routers, whose core can communicate with each other inside and outside the system without adding other network functions.
It uses a BGA-3275 slot and can support 32 optical ports at the same time (at a speed of 32 GB/s/dir) and a custom DDR5-4400 DRAM of 32 GB.
The platform will also support an OCP sled package size of up to 16 slots, so it can have 120 cores and 8448 threads at the highest configuration, and support DRAM up to 512 GB.
Intel also demonstrated the power consumption of its CPU and Fmax data. The eight-core chip has 75W TDP, most of which is used in the field of photonics, while the core itself occupies only about 21% of the power consumption, about 16W.
The chip is said to be able to maintain a balance between a frequency of about 3.35-3.5 GHz and a power of 35-55W, and the company claims that a tenfold increase in the number of cores will yield a corresponding linear performance.
