Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com August 30 news, according to foreign media CNews reported that the parent company of Russian CPU manufacturer Baikal is on the verge of bankruptcy and is preparing to auction its assets.

Baikal is part of T-Platforms, a Russian company that specializes in tens of billions of calculations. According to the report, T-Platforms is preparing to auction intellectual property rights, including patents and information related to domestic CPU.

According to reports, the estimated value of the auction is 484 million rubles (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 36.881 million yuan). Although the amount is small, it is still considerable for companies like Baikal, and the auction is scheduled to be held on September 26, 2023.

Andrey Evdokimov, CEO of Baikal, said that not only did Baikal Electronics not apply for these patents and would not even participate in the auction, the company did not intend to redeem its shares.

Evdokimov also said that the transfer of intellectual property rights would not hinder the company's development and considered this stage "encouraging" and would promote the development of "Baikal's products and ecosystems."

Baikal Electronics can be said to be the "trend leader" of Russian-made CPU. The company has conducted in-depth research on the Baikal-M series, and even tried to integrate Baikal CPU into notebook computers, using ARM architecture, but the overall architecture and technical performance has not caught up with the mainstream development, and it is naturally difficult to obtain market recognition.

Baikal Electronics hasn't released a new processor in years. One of its latest products is the Baikal-S server chip, which began production in October 2021. Also in the summer of 2021, Baikal released Baikal-M2, Baikal-L and Baikal-S2 processors for a variety of electronics categories, but so far they have only existed on paper. Production of all Baikal processors ceased on February 27, 2022.

Foreign media have previously reported that Baikal Electronics plans to shift its strategy to ASIC (Application specific Integrated Circuit) in the artificial intelligence industry, which may be one of the reasons why its chief executive sees the auction as an opportunity, and the company's complete focus on artificial intelligence is also a positive sign.
