In a letter to Tesla's legal department on July 26, NHTSA expressed concern about the monitoring and reminder mechanism of Tesla's Autopilot function. "recently, NHTSA learned that Tesla has introduced an Autopilot configuration that allows drivers to avoid having to apply torque to the steering wheel for a long time," the letter said. NHTSA is worried that this feature will be introduced into consumer vehicles, and now that the feature is known to the public, more drivers may try to activate it. This leads to a relaxation of controls originally designed to ensure that drivers participate in dynamic driving tasks, which may lead to inattention and inability to properly monitor Autopilot. "

NHTSA asked Tesla to submit the following information:

Details and dates of the software update, including when to introduce Tesla engineering vehicles and consumer vehicles

To activate the setting of "reduce or eliminate Autopilot prompts the driver to exert torque" in the software update

Detailed steps or conditions required to restore a vehicle to a normal state with a software update activated

The impact of the setting of "reduce or eliminate the situation where Autopilot prompts the driver to apply torque" in the software update on Autopilot's monitoring system, including the time that Autopilot allows operation without prompting to apply torque, and any warning or tone presented to the driver

Other changes to the vehicle user interface, Autopilot functions, and vehicle control permissions

The basis or purpose of installing relevant software to consumer vehicles outside of engineering vehicles, including, but not limited to, which consumer vehicles or owners are eligible for relevant software updates

Experience or discovery learned from vehicles using relevant software updates

Documents that explain the functions of the software

Test plans or instructions for Tesla engineers responsible for carrying out related software update vehicles

Reports of collisions or dangers that occur on vehicles updated with relevant software

Last week, Ann Carlson, director of NHTSA, said the Autopilot investigation would be "resolved relatively quickly".
