Samsung has begun shipping GDDR7 samples to Nvidia to verify Nvidia's next generation of products. According to BusinessKorea, SK Hynix does not want to lag behind and plans to complete its own GDDR7 technology within this year. By contrast, Micron only said it would launch its first GDDR7 product in the first half of next year.

According to the source, Nvidia is interested in matching as many GDDR IC models as possible to its GPU to encourage competition among suppliers and eventually make GeForce graphics cards cheaper.

As previously reported by IT House, Samsung Electronics announced in July that it would complete the research and development of its industry's first GDDR7, which will first be tested on the next-generation system of its major customers this year.

The Samsung GDDR7 achieves an excellent bandwidth of 1.5 terabytes per second (TBps), which is 1.4 times that of the GDDR6 1.1TBps, and each data I / O (input / output) port rate can reach 32Gbps. The product uses pulse amplitude modulation (PAM3) signal mode to replace the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal mode of previous generations, thus achieving a significant improvement in performance. In the same signal period, PAM3 signal mode can transmit 50% more data than NRZ signal mode.

In addition, GDDR7 is designed to use energy-saving technology suitable for high-speed operation, which is 20% higher than that of GDDR6. Samsung offers a low-voltage option for power-intensive devices such as laptops.

In order to minimize the heating of video memory chips, in addition to integrated circuit (IC) architecture optimization, Samsung also uses epoxy molded compound (EMC) materials with high thermal conductivity in packaging materials. Compared with GDDR6, these improvements not only significantly reduce the thermal resistance by 70%, but also help GDDR7 achieve stable performance at high speed.
