CTOnews.com, August 29 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft has stepped up its efforts to promote Bing search engine and Edge browser in Windows 11 (and 10), with the latest ad trying to get users to use Bing instead of Google search by default in Google Chrome browser.

According to Windows Latest, the pop-up window appears in the lower right corner of the desktop, covering all apps and games. The ad reminds users of the benefits of using Bing, such as support for artificial intelligence chat and Microsoft rewards.

A Microsoft spokesman confirmed in an interview with Windows Latest that the company was aware that the pop-up window would appear on top of the game (bypassing the notification setting) and had suspended the ad and would investigate the situation.

The pop-up window, which is aimed at devices with Google Chrome browser installed and using Google search, bypasses all notifications and focus auxiliary settings, and some users say it also appears when playing games or watching videos.

The pop-up window is related to a tool called BGAUpsell.EXE, which is related to Microsoft Bing Service 2.0, a background process designed to enhance Bing functionality on Windows 11 and 10. This file may interact with various functions that integrate Bing, including Windows search. This tool refers to "IsEdgeUsedInLast48Hours", indicating that a pop-up window may be triggered if Microsoft Edge has not been used in the past 48 hours. It is also possible that Microsoft can detect whether Google or other search engines are activated in Google browser, which explains why pop-up windows only appear on some devices.

CTOnews.com notes that Google has done a similar thing. When users use Microsoft Edge to open YouTube, Gmail and other services, they will often see Google ads recommending the use of Chrome.
