Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Davidlili for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com August 28 news, Microsoft server side quietly updated, many users have received Bing.com push notification, recommend users to use Microsoft Bing search and Bing Chat.

According to known information, this pop-up window will mainly appear on the desktops of Win11 and Win10 users who have set Google or other search engines as Chrome's preferred search engine, regardless of what they are doing, even in a full-screen game.

This pop-up window, mainly to promote Microsoft Rewards bonus points and Bing Chat, appears in various Windows 11 settings, such as notifications and focus aids, and even pops up when users are playing games. (CTOnews.com Note: in fact, full-screen games block all notifications in the system by default, so this is interesting).

As we can see from the picture, "you can earn Microsoft Rewards points when you search. Come and experience the new Bing, your AI-driven search engine. Install Bing services to improve the search experience."

After further exploration, some users found that the pop-up window was triggered by the C:\ Windows\ Temp\ MUBSTemp\ BGAUpsell.exe file, which happens to be associated with Microsoft Bing Service 2.0 and is designed to enhance the security of Bing on Windows 11 and 10. With this update, Microsoft transitioned Bing from the less secure SHA-1 algorithm to the more secure SHA-2 algorithm.

At present, BGAUpsell.exe files are legal system files in Windows 11, which represent notifications related to Microsoft and can provide users with various pop-up windows through communication with Microsoft API.

Users found that Microsoft added an attribute called "IsEdgeUsedInLast48Hours" to the BGAUpsell.exe file to check when the user last used Microsoft Edge. This pop-up event may be triggered if Edge has not been used in the past 48 hours.

In addition, Microsoft seems to be able to detect not only how long users use Microsoft Edge, but also whether users are using Google or other search engines in Chrome, and pop-up alerts will appear if this is detected.

In fact, Microsoft Windows 11 is often complained by users because of these annoying pop-up windows, but Microsoft seems to have no intention of reining in at all.

It is worth mentioning that Microsoft Edge last week also marked the ChromeSetup installer as harmful and advised users to continue to use Edge browsers.
