Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 28 (Xinhua)-- South Korean technology companies are worried that cheap robots from China are threatening their own restaurant service robot market, according to a report.
Robot waiters have been widely used in restaurants in South Korea due to labor shortages caused by the population crisis. There are 5000 service robots working in restaurants in South Korea, according to data from the Korea Robotics Industry Association quoted by the Financial Times. According to a report in the Korea Times in April, a boss put a tablet computer on every table in his restaurant to replace the job of a waiter. During the outbreak, Reuters reported that South Korean technology company KT began selling to restaurants a wheelbarrow-like artificial intelligence robot called Aglio Kim, which can deliver food to four tables at a time.
However, South Korean technology companies told the Financial Times that they were now worried that the market was flooded with cheap Chinese robots, hampering the development of their own robot makers.
Service technology has become more advanced in recent years, not only for tablets on the table, but also for fully autonomous robots to take orders and deliver food. The price of a Chinese-made service robot ranges from 10 million to 3000 million won (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 55000 to 165000 yuan), about 1/5 of similar products in South Korea. One executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Financial Times that they were trying to win the competition with higher-quality robots, "but it's not easy". South Korean companies are looking for more ways to cope with competition from cheap Chinese goods. Some start-ups in South Korea offer 300,000 won (currently about 1650 yuan) a month to rent robots to restaurants, Aju Korea Daily reported in May. However, some industry insiders believe that government subsidies are also needed to compete with Chinese imports.
