"the photo does not have a sense of breathing", "the photo does not look clean enough", "the main body of the photo is not prominent enough".
All these problems may be caused by one reason-there is no reasonable blank in the picture.
Let's first compare two photos:
The first one looks like trying to stuff a lot of elements into the photo, but it turns out that the focus is not prominent and seems a bit confusing, while the second one makes the photo more orderly and hierarchical, less oppressive and more comfortable through reasonable white space.
So sometimes the photos look awkward and chaotic, not because we didn't take the best moments, but because we didn't make good use of the wonderful blanks. Good blanks can bring a lot of advantages to the photos:
1. The sense of breathing can be understood as the "degree of relaxation" of the photo, that is, there is a certain "blank" in the photo and there is no sense of pressure.
Most of the photos with no sense of breathing are arranged with a lot of elements, some of which have nothing to do with the subject of the photo, disturb the line of sight, and make the picture look very compact and "airtight".
Well, when filming, on the one hand, we can arrange more "activity space" for the subject, that is, try to avoid the subject occupying too much picture and let it interact with the environment to a certain extent.
On the other hand, keep the picture concise and don't include irrelevant sundries in the picture.
two。 Highlighting the subject with appropriate white space can make the subject more prominent and make the theme of the photo more clear.
For example, when we shoot portraits, we will take the initiative to choose a concise background so as not to affect the performance of the characters.
The same is true of scenery, documentary, still life and other photography, concise background, appropriate white space can make the subject more prominent.
3. A concise, clean and appropriate blank can make the photo look more concise, refreshing and cleaner.
Minimalist photos are like this, the composition is simple, the elements are single, and the photos leave a lot of "negative space". This "simple" style can give people a simple and comfortable geometric beauty.
In daily shooting, we can also learn from the "minimalist" thinking, do not want to put many elements into the same picture, can arrange the most important elements to get a very good picture.
4. Imagining the blank of the space picture is not only as simple as looking more refreshing, the wonderful blank can give people imaginative space and make people feel that it is not enough.
Just like traditional landscape painting, leaving blank is not necessarily "empty", but integrated with the elements in the picture, using blank space to express the feelings of "serenity", "comfort", "profound" and so on. This can be well reflected in landscape photography:
And "blank" is not necessarily the "blank" of the photo, nor does it have to be white. Shadows in the photo, large solid color elements or repetitive elements can all be used as "blank".
