Huawei's recently released Kirin 990 chipset does use a variant of the integrated 5G modem, which can save battery life and free up some extra memory. The device is designed by the silicon department of Chinese manufacturers and manufactured by TSMC using a 7 nm EUV process. Basically, EUV or EUV lithography is a more precise way to create patterns on a chip. This allows more transistors to be installed inside the integrated circuit, making it more powerful and energy efficient. The 5G chipset contains 10.3 billion transistors, while the 4G version contains only 8 billion transistors. The Kirin 990 will make its debut in the Huawei Mate 30 series and is expected to power the foldable Mate X (whenever launched) and the P40 series next year.

On Thursday, an unknown Huawei device called NLE-AL00 was launched on the geek platform (via WCCFTech) and runs Android 10. GizmoChina refers to a source. The single-core and multi-core scores of Kirin 990 were 3842 and 1164, respectively. The single-core score and multi-core score of Qilin 990 were 5472 and 13769, respectively. Based on the clock speed of the listed 1.86GHz, in the Geekbench test of Kirin 990, the results seem to come from the 4G LTE variant of the chipset. This is because the Cortex-A55 kernels on Kirin 9905G run on 1.95GHz, while those on 4G LTE run on 1.86GHz.

We should point out that the A13 Bionic was designed by Apple in California, but it is also made by TSMC using an enhanced version of its 7nm EUV process, the N7 Pro. And prepare for more powerful chips in the near future. TSMC should launch a 5-nanometer chipset next year and then a 3-nanometer chip in 2022. To show you what's at stake here (you wouldn't be surprised if there are 10.3 billion transistors in a single 5G Kirin 990 SoC), a single chip manufactured with a 5-nanometer process will contain 171.3 million transistors per square millimeter. While some say the industry may not exceed 3nm, at least at the rate we have experienced since the early 1970s, TSMC says it is looking for ways to improve chip packaging. One method being studied is to stack transistors vertically rather than side by side. Another possibility is to stay away from silicon and materials of different properties.
