India currently claims to be developing the lunar ship 4 probe, and this time ISRO will work with the Japanese space development agency to launch the lunar ship 4 in 2026-2028.

Lunar ship 3 has a higher landing latitude, but it does not exceed 70 °south latitude, and it is still less than 86 °from the real lunar pole. Scientifically, it can not be completely considered that the probe landed at the lunar south pole, but there are some differences.

Lunar ship 4 will land in the lunar south pole, and the goal of the probe is to "find evidence of water on the moon." previous studies have shown that there is a possibility of water at the lunar south pole.

According to the plan, after landing near the lunar south pole, the lunar ship 4 will use a drilling rig developed by India to take underground samples of the moon and heat it to analyze whether it contains volatiles, especially water ice resources. The lander will also verify lunar night survival technology with a design life of up to six months to support more complex lunar exploration missions in the future.
