CTOnews.com, August 25 (Xinhua)-- A new study from the University of Antwerp found that 90% of the so-called "eco-paper straws" on the market contain "polyfluorinated and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)," a compound that hardly breaks down and gradually accumulates in the body, leading to a series of health problems.

It is reported that PFAS may lead to testicular cancer, thyroid disease, kidney cancer and other diseases, human beings are mainly exposed to PFAS through food and drinking water. Foreign media newsweek claimed that many food packaging materials and plastic bags also contain PFAS, these substances will be gradually transferred to the human body in the process of daily human life.

The ▲ source paper page tandfonlineCTOnews.com noted that the researchers tested 39 different brands of straws, including paper, glass, bamboo, stainless steel and plastic, and analyzed 29 different PFAS compounds.

The results showed that most of the brands tested contained perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, while paper straws had the highest levels of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. The researchers claimed that the chemical was detected in 90 per cent of the brands tested on the market. These PFAS are highly water soluble and may seep into the drink from the straw and enter the human body.

Bamboo straws were only slightly better than paper straws. PFAS was found in 80 per cent of brands tested, the chemical was found in 75 per cent of plastic straws and 40 per cent of glass straws, and PFAS was not detected in any steel straws tested.

"straws made from plant materials such as paper and bamboo are often advertised as healthier and more environmentally friendly than plastic straws," said researcher Thimo Groffen. However, the presence of PFAS compounds in these straws means this is not necessarily the case. For health reasons, the researchers advise people to bring their own stainless steel straws instead of using "eco-paper straws".
