Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 24 (Xinhua)-- the mixed reality Touxian project developed by Google and Samsung is now facing setbacks after it was reported in June that Google had abandoned its Project Iris augmented reality glasses project, Insider reported.
The device, internally codenamed Project Moohan, is said to provide a hybrid reality experience driven by the Android platform. The project has been under way since at least last year, CTOnews.com notes, which coincides with the vague announcement by Google, Samsung and Qualcomm earlier this year that they would create a hybrid reality platform.
But the Moohan project has become a "political problem" for Google. Sources told Insider that the partnership made Samsung "more likely to call the shots on product features" and that the company did not want other hardware departments at Google to know about the project, fearing that they might try to build a competitive product.
A report by South Korean media SBS Biz suggested that Samsung had begun to control the project. It is reported that after the release of Apple's Vision Pro, the company postponed plans to start production of the head show, which means we may not see the new head show until the middle of next year.
Even with the delay, some Google employees thought it wasn't enough to make the device stand out, and someone told Insider, "it definitely doesn't provide enough buffer time to compete with Vision Pro." This poses another obstacle to Google's mixed reality plan.
Although Mark Lucovsky, head of its AR software, announced his departure from the company this summer, Google doesn't seem to have completely abandoned its plans for AR glasses. Insider reported that Google is exploring how to combine AI with AR glasses and has also incorporated Iris's software into another project called Betty, which Google will use to "build a 'mini XR' software that it intends to sell to eyeglass manufacturers." According to Insider, Betty may be for a single purpose, meaning it projects images in front of only one lens, but another project called Barry will be binocular.
