Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Sweet Peanut, new soft media friend 2xrpri, grass Luo Yuzi, Orchid is me, lemon_meta, wooden table, Quinlan, sister adult, Xicheng Peng Yuyan, and then bang me to deliver the clues! CTOnews.com, August 23 (Xinhua) at 20:34 Beijing time on August 23, the Indian Lunar ship 3 probe successfully completed a soft landing near the South Pole at 69.37 degrees south and 32.35 degrees east longitude. This is also the first time that man has visited the South Pole of the moon at close range.

It also means that India has since become the fourth country to land on the lunar surface after the United States, the Soviet Union and China.

According to public data, the lunar ship 3 probe includes a propulsion module, a lander and a lunar rover. The lunar ship 3 is composed of a lander "Vikram" and a lunar rover (Pragyan), with a total weight of about 3.9tons.

This is the third lunar exploration project launched by India. In 2008, India successfully launched its first lunar probe, Lunar ship 1, and obtained a lot of images and exploration data, but then Lunar ship 1 went missing; in July 2019, India launched Lunar ship 2 probe, then disappeared while trying to make a soft landing, and later confirmed the crash.

In addition, India and Japan are jointly promoting the development of the lunar polar exploration mission. Although the project has not been formally established, it has been called "Lunar ship 4" by the Indian side and is expected to be launched in 2026-2028.

According to the plan, after landing near the lunar south pole, the lunar ship 4 will use a drilling rig developed by India to take underground samples of the moon and heat it to analyze whether it contains volatiles, especially water ice resources. The lander will also verify lunar night survival technology with a design life of up to six months to support more complex lunar exploration missions in the future.

In order to improve its space autonomy, India is demonstrating the "Lunar ship 5" project, which may be launched before 2030. Its positioning and function are similar to Lunar ship 4, and it is also planned to land at the South Pole of the moon, but India will lead the mission to develop a large lunar rover and drill samples for in-situ research.

It is worth mentioning that India is also considering a long-term mission for lunar sampling and return, which may be named "Lunar ship 6", but will be implemented after 2030.

With regard to the lunar mission, the official science popularization of the Science and Technology Committee of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation was also carried out on Weibo.

In fact, "Lunar ship 3" is not the first time that Indian space has set its sights on the moon. This is the third time that India has launched a mission to the moon. In 2008, India successfully launched its first lunar probe, Lunar ship 1, and obtained a large number of images and exploration data, but the Lunar ship 1, which had been in operation for two years, went missing in August 2009.

India launched the Lunar ship 2 probe in July 2019, and its lander went missing during a soft landing on the lunar surface in September of that year, and the lander was admitted to have crashed in November.

But in fact, "Lunar ship 2" has not completely failed, and its orbiter is still orbiting the moon, continuously providing data for lunar scientific research and future exploration missions, and successfully establishing a communication connection with "Lunar ship 3". In addition, many of the scientific instruments on the "Lunar ship 2" were independently developed by India, which tempered the development of India's aerospace supporting industry and accumulated experience for the next lunar exploration mission.

Sridara Panik Somanath, president of the Indian Space Research Organization, said that based on the analysis of data related to Lunar ship 2, Lunar ship 3 has made improvements.

After the lunar ship 3 successfully landed on the moon, the lunar ship mission carried scientific instruments to study the thermophysical properties of the lunar weathering layer, lunar seismicity and lunar surface plasma environment.

If all goes according to plan, the six-wheeled rover will pop up after the moon landing and explore around rocks and craters on the moon's surface, collect data and images, and send them back to Earth for analysis.
