CTOnews.com, August 23 (Xinhua) A research team at the University of Illinois has developed a new coating designed specifically for steam condenser pipes, which the team believes could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 460 million tons per year if widely promoted.

It is reported that the researchers set out to improve the heat transfer efficiency of the condensing coating, they developed a coating made of fluorinated diamond-like carbon (F-DLC), which is a hydrophobic material. When the steam condenses on the coating, the steam will no longer form a "water film" on the surface of the coating, but will more easily condense into water droplets. This helps steam transfer faster, thereby improving the efficiency of the device in which the condensing coating is applied.

In the wear test, the coating can still maintain its function after being worn for 5000 times.

Muhammad Hoque, lead author of the study by the University of Illinois research team at ▲ Image Source, said: "it's amazing that we can do this with a F-DLC coating because it uses only carbon and a small amount of silicon, so it's quite cheap and the coating is so universal that it can be brushed on any common metal surface.

The research team said they planned to next test the performance of the coating for six months under actual industrial conditions.

"if all goes well, we want to show everyone that this is an economically viable and effective solution," said Nenad Miljkovic, lead researcher on the project.
