CTOnews.com, August 23 (Xinhua)-- scientists have recently developed a therapeutic technique called autologous limbal epithelial cells (CALEC), which uses stem cells from healthy parts of patients' eyes to successfully repair corneal problems caused by limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD).

LSCD means that when the number or function of limbal stem cells decreases, the cornea is unable to maintain the integrity of its surface epithelium, resulting in visual impairment.

Clinical features of LSCD include conjunctivitis, recurrent or persistent epithelial defects, inflammation and corneal scars, resulting in permanent vision loss, pain, discomfort and decreased quality of life in the affected eyes.

In a phase 1 clinical trial of 4 eyes with chemical burns, the team from Mass General Brigham found that the new CALEC treatment was safe and feasible.

A statement from the researchers reported that after 12 months of follow-up, two of them were able to receive a corneal transplant, while the other two significantly improved their eyesight and no longer needed additional treatment.

Autologous limbal epithelial cells (CALEC) were treated with innovative techniques without exogenous drugs, serum and antibiotics. Limbal biopsy samples were collected from patients at first.

Limbal stem cells were then isolated from the sample and then expanded and grown on the graft. CALEC grafts are sent back to the medical center after 2-3 weeks of growth and then transplanted into eyes with corneal injuries.
