CTOnews.com, Aug. 23 (Xinhua)-- 1-year-old children who are exposed to mobile devices for 1 to 4 hours a day are more likely to develop stunting in communication, fine motor, problem-solving, personal and social skills at age 2, according to a study published Monday in the American Journal of Medical Pediatrics.

The study tracked 7097 children, said Jason Nagata, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, Francisco:

This is a very important study, the largest sample size survey in the past few years.

The study fills an important gap in determining the correlation between screen usage time and stunted growth such as communication and problem solving.

The study measured the amount of time one-year-old children spent using the screen each day, as well as their performance of various skills at the ages of 2 and 4. The report says that if one-year-old children use the screen for more than four hours a day, they are three times more likely to develop stunting by the age of two than the control group.

The report said that children who spent more than four hours a day on the screen were 4.78 times more likely to have substandard communication skills at the age of 2, 1.74 times more likely to have substandard fine movements, and twice as likely to have substandard personal and social skills as the control group.
