Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, August 22 (CTOnews.com)-South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom (SK Telecom, SKT) said that 5G failed to deliver on its promise, there were no killer applications, many tasks were still far from complete, and consumers were disappointed by high expectations and an imperfect ecosystem.
In a white paper entitled "5G lessons learned, 6G key requirements, 6G Network Evolution and 6G Spectrum" (CTOnews.com hereinafter referred to as "the White Paper"), Tu Yuan PexelsSKT said that the statement of 5G mobile technology is so exaggerated that it has so far failed to deliver on its promise and there are no killer applications.
In the early days of the promotion of 5G technology, it was thought to help promote the development of autopilot, drones, augmented reality and digital twins, the authors say. However, due to a variety of factors, including immature technology and services, low market demand, or policy and regulatory issues, all of this did not come true.
The white paper emphasizes that the performance of the 5G network is not a problem, but the problem lies in the application. Its network speed is fast enough in some areas, but users still face traffic limits, and faster speeds have a limited increase in user experience.
SKT argues that some of the goals set by the United Nations International Organization for Standardization (ITU-R) for 5G have been met, but there are still many tasks that are far from being completed four years after the technology's commercial deployment. These goals are supposed to be achieved in the long run, but these expectations are not accurately communicated to consumers, resulting in users'"high expectations".
The white paper mentions that 5G includes incremental improvements on top of existing technologies, which means that users are unlikely to notice them at the moment.
Of course, 5G has achieved some results so far. SKT points out that the data cost per GB of 5G networks is 70% lower than that of LTE, so 5G customers use 50% more data than the previous generation.
The white paper also pointed out that 6G is already in development and is expected to make its debut in 2030, which can avoid the mistakes made by 5G.
They believe that the success of 6G will also depend on the development of artificial intelligence and sensing technologies, without which technologies that rely on next-generation cellular broadband networks will not work. Many of these technologies are just more mature versions of 5G technology, such as L4 autopilot, XR, UAM and digital twins.
SKT plans to take the lead in developing 6G technology to contribute to South Korea's becoming a global ICT leader. Of course, the United States and China, the current leaders in the field of communications, are already developing 6G technology, while Japan and the European Union are also working to do so.
