CTOnews.com found that compared with the CPU chip with general computing power, the volcano engine self-developed chip only supports video codec tasks, so it can have higher computing density in specific scenarios. The official declared that "the transcoding capability of one video codec chip server is equivalent to that of hundreds of CPU servers."

Tan Dai, president of the volcano engine, said that at present, the amount of video data is growing explosively, and the application scene is also expanding. To this end, Volcano engine cooperates with Nvidia to open source BMF (BabitMultiMediaFramework) multimedia processing framework, which can better support heterogeneous computing resources such as CPU, GPU and video codec chips, and give full play to their respective advantages in different scenarios, which will significantly reduce the computing, storage and transmission bandwidth costs of network video services.

Wang Yue, Technical Director of Video Cloud Architecture of Volcano engine, said, "for each generation of video coding, the quality bitrate is reduced by 50%, but the amount of large-scale video data increases more than twofold. The iterative speed of video coding standards can no longer catch up with the growth rate of video data, and computing bottlenecks must be broken through hardware innovation."
