Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 22 (Xinhua)-- the world's first container ship using "green methanol" fuel has embarked on its maiden voyage. The container ship, named Laura Maersk (Laura Maersk), is the first of a series of 25 methanol-powered container ships ordered by Danish shipping giant Maersk.
After inquiry, CTOnews.com learned that the container ship, which is 172m long and can carry 2100 6m containers, was built in Hyundai Opo, South Korea, and was officially delivered on July 10 this year. The ship, which can use both methanol and conventional fossil fuels, filled the first batch of green methanol fuel in the port of Ulsan, South Korea, on July 16, and then set sail for Copenhagen, which will use green methanol fuel provided by OCI Global during the 21500 km maiden voyage.
A spokesman for the ▲ Tuyuan Maritime Executive Suez Canal Special Economic Zone said the Laura Maersk was fueled with 500T green methanol fuel via the barge "Lara S" belonging to the Dutch fuel manufacturer OCI Global, which took nearly six hours. The green methanol fuel refueling business is the first in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East and is part of Egypt's strategy to restore ship refueling services, whether using fossil fuels or green fuels.
Maersk said that green methanol was "the only solution for a decade" and that using this bio-methanol to drive transmission, the ship would produce about 65% less carbon dioxide emissions than conventional fuels during the voyage.
Maersk also said that it does not rule out the use of ammonia or other green materials in future ships, and methanol carriers can also be converted to other materials.
Maersk also announced that it had set ambitious sustainability goals to be carbon neutral by 2040, at least 10 years ahead of most of its counterparts in the shipping industry. At the same time, Maersk has set a more recent target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ocean-going fleets by 50 per cent and absolute emissions from its fully controlled terminals by 70 per cent by 2030.
