Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 22 (Xinhua)-- JetBrains's official website recently released a blog about the naming inconsistencies and acronyms that have plagued many Kotlin developers over the past two years, and officials will abandon the product name "Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile" (KMM).
From now on, regardless of the target combination, "Kotlin Multiplatform" (KMP) is the preferred term for Kotlin technology that shares code across platforms.
CTOnews.com learned from his blog that Kotlin Multiplatform was first released on KotlinConf 2017 under the name "Kotlin Multiplatform Projects" and initially supported JVM, Native, and JS targets. Early adopters mainly used the acronym "KMP" and less "MPP". Until 2020, the technology was in the experimental stage, and the team adjusted it based on feedback from early adopters.
In 2020, officials shifted their focus to code sharing between iOS and Android, and hoped to attract more mobile developers to use Kotlin Multiplatform. To reflect this focus, officials split all content related to code sharing between iOS and Android in Kotlin Multiplatform into a separate product called "Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile", introduced the acronym KMM for it, and announced the Alpha version. At the same time, the official release of the Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile plug-in for Android Studio.
While the Alpha version of the new Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile name has attracted attention, it has also caused confusion because developers are not sure what to call technologies that share code outside of iOS and Android. "KMP" is also included in the names of some existing community content and libraries, further exacerbating this confusion, resulting in ecosystems with multiple names-Kotlin Multiplatform and Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile-as well as the abbreviations KMP, KMM, and MPP.
In order to solve the problem of naming inconsistencies and acronyms that have plagued many Kotlin developers over the past two years, JetBrains decided to abandon the product name "Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile".
From now on, regardless of the combination of platforms, "Kotlin Multiplatform" (KMP) is the preferred term for Kotlin technology that shares code across platforms.
JetBrains officials say KMP is ideal for sharing code across multiple platforms, not just iOS and Android, but also with desktops and servers. In addition, officials are actively developing Kotlin / Wasm to promote modern Web development using Kotlin Multiplatform.
