The U.S. Transportation Safety Administration is investigating complaints about Ford's Mustang Mach-E recall

CTOnews.com, August 22 (Xinhua)-- the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into the handling of nearly 49000 Mustang Mach-E electric SUV recalled by Ford Motor Company last year.

Ford launched a recall in June 2022 because the electric SUV's high-voltage contactor overheated, according to Automotive News. This kind of failure may cause the electric vehicle to lose power suddenly while driving, increasing the risk of accident, which usually occurs after high-speed charging or repeated rapid acceleration.

In response to the recall, Ford updated its software through OTA to reduce battery power when the contactor is overheated to prevent sudden power loss and possible contactor damage. Ford also suspended deliveries of new cars at dealerships until they received software updates. In addition, Ford issued a service announcement to replace high-voltage battery junction boxes in the affected vehicles.

Now, NHTSA's defect investigation office has received 12 consumer complaints questioning Ford's solution, claiming that there was a failure of the main contactor of the high-voltage battery in the 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E vehicles involved, all of which were included in the recalled 22V-412 and repaired before the accident, for which the office has launched a recall inquiry (RQ). The remedy for this recall is to update the secondary vehicle Diagnostic Control Module (SOBDMC) software to monitor the contactor temperature and reduce the battery power to prevent contactor damage, and to update the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) software to monitor the contactor resistance, identify overheated contactors and reduce the vehicle power to prevent further damage.

A customer complaint on August 19th claimed that they had to replace the high-voltage battery junction box twice because of the same electrical system problems. Another complaint claimed that the failure occurred again after the software update.

CTOnews.com noted that the initial recall affected 48924 2021 and 2022 Mustang Mach-E models, all of which were manufactured at the Cuatilan plant in Mexico between May 27, 2020 and May 24, 2022. In response to the new inquiry, NHTSA said 64727 vehicles were included in the investigation.
