Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com August 21 news, Red Hat announced two months ago that it would restrict access to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) source code. CTOnews.com reported earlier that this has seriously hindered the future development of Linux distributions such as AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux.

For this decision, Benny Vasquez, chairman of the AlmaLinux OS Foundation, previously told foreign media SiliconANGLE that "the impact on ordinary users is actually very small."

In general, apart from kernel updates, we are the same as before. AlmaLinux may not provide updates for the new version of RHEL on the day it is released, but developers can still get Red Hat enhancements and bug fixes through CentOS Stream.

It is reported that because CentOS Stream has become the only warehouse for the release of public RHEL-related source code, and Red Hat currently focuses only on paying customers, the development of AlmaLinux based on RHEL has been completely blocked. AlmaLinux is a cloned version based on RHEL, initiated by CloudLinux, its development began after Red Hat decided to stop developing CentOS, and the first official release was released in March 2021, using RHEL 8 as its basis.

According to Benny Vasquez, although it is widely believed that everything in CentOS Stream will not appear in RHEL in the end, this is not the case. "I can't think of any reason why anything they post in RHEL won't appear in Stream in advance."

According to Vasquez, the change in Red Hat strategy is a blessing in disguise for AlmaLinux. "when you're basically copying other people's code, you don't have to make any decisions about technology. We think this is the release of our one-on-one relationship, and we can interact with our community in a new and exciting way." in other words, "AlmaLinux will not follow RHEL and can be himself."

Benny Vasquez also claimed that Red Hat's decision became an opportunity to donate to the project, with many developers and companies taking the initiative to donate to the AlmaLinux project. It is said that "the number of people donating $5 a day has more than quadrupled."

Benny Vasquez said users of AlmaLinux and other RHEL-compatible distributions do not have to worry about being abandoned. "We will continue to get the support we need from a code and financial point of view, and more and more suppliers are helping to ensure that their customers are supported."
