CTOnews.com, August 21 (Xinhua)-- Ford recently unveiled a new supercar called Mustang (Mustang) GTD, which uses a carbon fiber body and optimizes its aerodynamic design. It is the most powerful road car in Ford's history. Limited production of the car will begin at the end of next year and will sell for about $300000 in the United States (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 2.193 million yuan).

Mustang GTD, developed by Ford in partnership with racing manufacturer Multimatic, is inspired by Mustang GT3, which will compete in Le Mans next year. GTD stands for GT Daytona, a level in the American Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Racing Championship and complies with the GT3 specification of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

The Mustang GTD is equipped with a heavily revamped turbocharged V8 engine with an output of more than 800hp, making the GTD the most powerful Mustang to date, stronger than the 700hp Shelby GT500 launched in 2019 and even the $1.4 million track-only Ford GT MK IV launched last year. The 5.2-liter engine is larger than a standard road car and uses racing-grade components such as dry oil sump, double air intake and titanium valve exhaust system to compete with European supercars such as Lamborghini.

The Mustang GTD transfers power to the 345mm wide rear wheel through a lightweight carbon fiber drive shaft and an eight-speed gearbox. The gearbox has a rear design to achieve a weight distribution of close to 50:50, and Ford has been simulated to prove that this is the "most effective way to transfer power to the ground."

The chassis of the Mustang GTD is also very different from the standard model, which is equipped with a semi-active suspension system, which can adjust the spring stiffness and body height according to different modes. The front suspension uses a racing-style "short and long arm" design to improve rigidity and responsiveness. The rear suspension is mounted on a lightweight tubular subframe, the same as the GT3. The suspension control unit and the gearbox cooling system are placed in the original trunk position at the rear.

The Mustang GTD has a wheel distance of nearly 100mm more than the standard car, plus a huge 325mm wide front tire (wider than the GT rear tire), which greatly improves grip and steering stability. Buyers can choose between 20-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels or magnesium alloy wheels that mimic GT3 cars.

Mustang GTD's aerodynamic kit comes almost entirely from the GT3, including a huge hydraulically adjustable rear wing, ventilation hood, large air intake, strong front spoiler and rear diffuser to reduce wind resistance, increasing downforce at high speed and stability at corners. The braking force is provided by huge carbon ceramic brakes that can resist thermal decay during repeated braking.

The interior of the Mustang GTD is closer to the racing car than the standard model, retaining the digital display and standard infotainment system, and has the function of remote software update. However, the rear seats were removed to lose weight, and the front seats were replaced with track-fit Recaro sports seats, and knobs, nameplates and shift picks were printed in 3D from recycled F22 fighter jets.

Ford did not release Mustang GTD weight data, but the carbon fiber body and lightweight design mean it is likely to be lighter than the 1768-kilogram Mustang Dark Horse.

Ford said Mustang GTD's goal is to run a lap time of less than seven minutes at the Newborough Green, which will put it on a par with European supercars such as Porsche 911 GT2 RS, Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.
