CTOnews.com, August 20 (Xinhua)-- A research team investigated the effects of games on the brain and found that playing video games such as Super Mario 64 has a positive effect on mental disorders such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, foreign media nintendoevery reported.

CTOnews.com learned from the results that the study asked adults to play Super Mario 64 for 30 minutes a day for two months, using magnetic resonance tomography (MRI) to measure changes in brain capacity and compared them with a control group that did not play video games.

Participants who played the game had increased gray matter in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and cerebellum. More importantly, these changes were most pronounced when participants said they wanted to continue playing the game.

"previous studies have also found differences in the brain structure of video game players, but this study shows a direct causal relationship between video games and increased brain size," said Simone Kuhn, a senior scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Life Psychology. "it proves that video games can train specific areas of the brain."

The institute says it plans to conduct follow-up studies to better understand the effects of play on mental health and is studying play as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
