CTOnews.com, August 20 (Xinhua)-- Mercedes-AMG unveiled the much-anticipated second-generation AMG GT sports car at Monterey Motor week, which competes with the Porsche 911 with a new design, improved comfort and practicality, and an optional 2-seat layout. The new GT only has a hard-top version and features the latest AMG performance and chassis technology, including the standard variable four-wheel drive system.

CTOnews.com noted that although every part of the body has been redesigned, the new GT is still highly recognizable. The angry face has a pan-American grille with a smooth black extension underneath, reminiscent of Black Series, which is about to withdraw from the market. The headlights are softer, while the slender taillights are connected by a strip, with an active rear spoiler below.

The model comes standard with 20-inch wheels, or you can choose 21-inch alloy wheels. The rear buttocks are wider, reminiscent of 9 / 11, and the proportion is more coordinated than before. This is because the new AMG GT is 182mm longer to 4728 mm, the wheelbase is also increased by 70mm to 2700 mm, and the new model is 45mm wider and 66mm taller than the previous generation.

Although the appearance and proportions look familiar, the AMG GT is based on a new architecture, using aluminum, steel, magnesium and fiber composites (glass and carbon), which provides more space for a 2x2 seating layout and a larger trunk.

In terms of interior, the car has a 12.3inch digital dashboard and 11.9in infotainment screen, which are inherited from the SL convertible, and the AMG performance steering wheel and bucket seats with integrated headrest also create an advanced and sporty atmosphere.

The space in the back row looks very small and is only suitable for children or people who are no more than 1.5 meters tall. The suitcase volume is between 321 and 675 litres, which is suitable for long-distance travel.

On the power side, the new car's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine has been upgraded to improve power and torque and meet Euro 7 emission standards. When it goes on sale, the model will be available in two V8-powered versions. The entry-level 55 version has 469 horsepower (350kW / 476kW / 476 ps) and 700Nm (516lb-ft) torque, and has the same acceleration time as the SL convertible in 3.9s and a top speed of 295km / h. The more powerful GT 63 has 577 horsepower (430kW / 585ps) and 800Nm (590lb-ft) torque, accelerates at 0100km / h in 3.2s and has a top speed of 315km / h. It's not clear whether the AMG will offer a low-profile 43 version with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine like the SL convertible, but according to spy photos, a more powerful plug-in hybrid GT E Performance is certain.

The new car is equipped with only a nine-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission, installed at the back of the engine, and uses a wet start clutch instead of a torque converter. Unlike the front version, GT now comes standard with a fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC + four-wheel drive system. Other standard configurations include the AMG active suspension control system with active roll stabilization, with active stabilizer lever, electronically controlled rear axle differential lock, active rear wheel steering and active aerodynamics.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT, which is expected to go on sale in the US in the first half of 2024, has yet to be priced and is expected to be more expensive than its equivalent SL convertible.
