CTOnews.com August 18 news, IEEE Journal Watch recently released an article, saying that in the promotion of environmentally friendly storage process, tape storage is an excellent solution.

IBM data storage senior expert, Arizona data storage consultant Brad Johns (Brad Johns) believes that in the foreseeable future, tape solutions can not only reduce the carbon footprint, but also reduce costs, is a greener, cheaper alternative.

Image source: according to statistics released by IDC, the total amount of data generated by pvsm is 33 Zbytes; in 2018 and is expected to reach 175 Zbytes by 2025.

According to the 2021 statistics of IDC and Seagate, 62 per cent of the data was written to HDD, 9 per cent to SSD and 15 per cent stored on tape.

Johns says that 60% of the data currently stored is "cold data", which means that it is not often accessed, and that it is a good choice to transfer this data to tape.

Johns says the average life of a hard drive is about five years. Seagate uses the Exos X18 as an example, saying that 2.5kg of carbon dioxide is produced per TB each year.

By comparison, magnetic tapes can have a storage life of more than 30 years. Calculated in terms of Fujifilm's LTO 9, each TB produces only 0.07kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, which is 3 per cent of the hard drive.

Johns said that if all "cold data" were transferred to the tape scheme, global carbon emissions could be reduced by 79 million tonnes a year, or 58 per cent.

And the cost is lower, taking the same 100PB data as an example, the tape storage solution costs $9476339 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 69.177 million yuan), while the hard disk solution costs $17707468 (currently about 129 million yuan).

The tape storage scheme can also reduce e-waste. Take the storage of 100PB data as an example, the hard disk storage scheme replaces the equipment every 5 years, generating 7.4 tons of waste every 10 years, while the magnetic tape scheme changes the equipment every 10 years, producing 3.6 tons of waste.
