CTOnews.com, August 18 (Xinhua)-- according to a recent paper published in the journal Advances in Infectious Diseases, most smartwatch users do not clean their straps, thus accumulating large amounts of bacteria such as staphylococci and E. coli.

A team of researchers from Florida Atlantic University tested different strap materials such as plastic, rubber, cloth, leather and metal and found that 95% of the straps contained dangerous bacteria.

The report notes that 85 per cent of watch bands contain staphylococci that cause staphylococcal infections; 60 per cent of watch bands contain E. coli; and 30 per cent of wearers tested positive for Pseudomonas, an antibiotic-resistant bacteria associated with sepsis and pneumonia.

The results showed that the strap made of cloth had the highest number of bacteria, followed by plastic and rubber, followed by leather, while the metal strap made of gold or silver carried the least number of bacteria.
