Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com Archaeologist Andrew Glikson and his team discovered Deniliquin, the largest crater in southern New South Wales, Australia, with a diameter of more than 520 kilometers, according to a paper published recently in Tectonphysics.
Based on years of asteroid impact research experience, the team analyzed the impact structure of the crater, and preliminary measurements showed that the impact crater was 520 kilometers in diameter, exceeding the Vredefort crater in South Africa (nearly 300 kilometers in diameter).
The team said that due to factors such as erosion, gravity, wind and water, some features of the asteroid's impact with Earth were hidden, but some impact structure features could still be judged.
Dr. Glikson said Deniliquin Crater was formed during the Cambrian period, about 514 million years ago.
Dr. Glikson said that in order to prove the impact, further physical evidence of the impact needs to be collected. At present, the team has begun to drill holes in the center, hoping to make more accurate judgments by extracting relevant substances and carefully analyzing them.
