Samsung SDI is discussing with Ulsan city officials about building a "next-generation battery" and the country's first lithium iron phosphate battery production line in the Ulsan industrial zone, the report said, citing industry and local government sources. A representative of Samsung SDI also said that it was not clear whether the lithium iron phosphate battery to be produced would be used in electric vehicles or energy storage systems, and that "final investment will take time".
According to a report by CTOnews.com earlier this month, citing market survey agency SNE Research, the number of newly registered power batteries installed in the world from January to June this year was 304.3 GWh, an increase of 50.1% over the same period last year. The battery load of South Korea's three largest battery manufacturers also increased across the board, but the combined market share was 23.9%, down 2.2 percentage points from a year earlier.
According to the specific brand of ▲ Tuyuan SNE Research, the installed capacity of LG new energy battery is 44.1GWh, up 50.3% from the same period last year. SK Innovation ranks third in the world with a market share of 14.5%, up 16.1% from the same period last year and ranking 5th in the world with a market share of 5.2%. Samsung SDI is 12.6GWh, up 28.2% from the same period last year and ranking seventh with a market share of 4.1%. The combined market share of the three South Korean companies was 23.9%, down 2.2 percentage points from a year earlier.
In sharp contrast to Chinese companies, China's Ningde era ranked first with a market share of 36.8 per cent in the same period, with battery loads rising 56.2 per cent year-on-year to 112GWh. BYD grew 102.4 per cent to 47.7GWh from a year earlier, followed by a market share of 15.7 per cent.
At the end of last month, it was also reported that Samsung SDI was in talks with a number of automakers to mass-produce all-solid-state batteries by 2027. "We cannot name our customers, but we are currently in talks with several carmakers about production plans for 2027," Sohn Michael, vice president and head of the strategic marketing team of Samsung SDI's medium and large battery division, said on a recent second-quarter earnings conference call.
