IT House, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) PepsiCo uses 21 Tesla Semi electric trucks at a bottling plant in Sacramento, California. In a video, PepsiCo describes the daily logistics operation of these all-electric trucks, including information on energy consumption, kinetic energy recovery and mileage. Tesla officials have not yet released detailed technical data for Semi.
Tesla has delivered only a small number of Semi electric trucks, most of which may have been given to PepsiCo, the first company to order Tesla's Semi five and a half years ago, and Tesla began delivering the Semi in early December 2022. PepsiCo may have received 36 of the 100 Semi ordered by now, according to a recall issued by NHTSA in June: 15 at its subsidiary Frito-Lay 's plant in Modesto, Calif., and 21 at its main location, Sacramento.
The video confirms that four Tesla chargers have been installed at the Sacramento site, each with a charging power of 750kW and can charge 80 per cent of the battery in less than 45 minutes. It is also mentioned in the video that Semi can be charged from 5-10% to 95% in 20 to 30 minutes.
PepsiCo uses 18 of the 21 Tesla Semi for multi-site distribution within a radius of 100 miles-two shifts a day, up to a maximum of 12 hours each. Amanda DeVoe, director of transformation and strategy at PepsiCo, said electric vehicles were particularly appropriate for these short trips between the company's bottling warehouse and distribution site in Sacramento. But according to Dejan Antunovic, director of PepsiCo's electrification program, the remaining three cars are sure to be used for long-distance transportation of 250 to 450 miles. Tesla officials say the Semi electric truck can travel 500miles (more than 800km) at full load.
The video also mentions Tesla Semi's kinetic energy recovery. Antunovic said Tesla's truck could achieve energy balance through kinetic energy recovery when returning from the Donna pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. A specific energy consumption value is also revealed in the video. PepsiCo uses Tesla Semi to consume an average of 1.7kWh per mile, equivalent to 1.1kWh per kilometer, according to the project manager. According to Tesla's website, the car "consumes less than 2 kilowatt hours per mile".
Other known information about Tesla Semi, due to the car's 1000 volt system, the battery can be recharged at 1 megawatt (1000 kilowatts). Therefore, the charging speed limit of the vehicle in Sacramento is the charger up to 750kW, not the vehicle itself. Like the Plaid versions of Model S and Model X, Tesla Semi has a drive system consisting of three electric drives, one for the most efficient constant speed driving and two for acceleration.
Tesla still did not give a price for the Semi, nor did he give other official details on the load, battery capacity, drive system performance or when mass production will begin, and more information about the Semi is likely to be released in September.
