CTOnews.com August 17, last week, the annual hacker conference Def Con was held in Las Vegas, USA. At this event, which brings together the world's top hackers and security experts, there is an interesting phenomenon: many participants use iPhone. This led to the mischievous idea of a hacker named Jae Bochs, who used a homemade device worth about $70 to send custom prompts to attendees through the Bluetooth low-power service, asking them to connect to their own Apple ID or share passwords with nearby Apple TV.

The Bluetooth low-power service was always on to allow iPhone to communicate with each other, and although Bochs said it was just a "joke", he admitted that the system could also be used for malicious purposes and may even induce users to share passwords to steal users' private information.

One of the purposes of Bochs is to remind people that the switch in the control center does not actually turn off Bluetooth (or Wi-Fi).

When users "turn off" Bluetooth on the iPhone in the control center interface, they are simply telling iPhone to disconnect from any directly connected device, such as headphones. However, the Bluetooth service is still running. To actually turn off the Bluetooth / Wi-Fi service and make it stop running completely, you need to go to the Settings application to close, for Bluetooth, that is Settings > Bluetooth, for Wi-Fi, that is Settings > Wi-Fi.

Apple has made no secret of this, and the instructions are clearly written on the company's support page. However, many people don't notice this information and simply think that switching the Bluetooth / Wi-Fi icon in the control center will shut down the service.

Bochs said they want Apple to add a pop-up window when users switch Bluetooth / Wi-Fi switches in the control center, reminding users that clicking on their Bluetooth icon will not completely turn off Bluetooth, and that their iPhone can still interact with close-activated beacons.
